 >View Microscope
Fact sheet
Description:

The matrix of 15665 is rather fine-grained, with scattered, eroded olivine phenocrysts. Ilmenite is platy and skeletal. The eroded olivine phenocrysts have silicate melt inclusions (see rotation 1). The pyroxene grains are optically and chemically zoned. Chromite has a distinct boundary with ulvospinel overgrowths. Metallic iron grains containing significant Co and Ni are present.

The sample weighed 10.2 grams before analysis and has not been dated.

Further details of this and other Apollo samples are here: http://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/lunar/

The mounting resin of this thin section has deteriorated over time and now contains clusters of colourful dendrites (obvious in reflected light) within and around the thin section.
